Pressure reducing valve installation

18/03/2026

The long-term trouble-free operation of a steam pressure reducing station largely depends on the installation of key auxiliary equipment. Steam-water separators and steam traps ensure that the steam entering the pressure reducing valve is dry, filters effectively prevent contaminants from entering, thus protecting the pressure reducing valve from premature wear, and shut-off valves and pressure gauges make maintenance and commissioning easy.

When the upstream pressure exceeds the maximum allowable pressure of the downstream equipment, a safety valve must be installed for overpressure protection.

The pressure-reducing valve in the pressure-reducing station should be selected according to the upstream and downstream pressures and steam flow rates of the pipeline. Generally, the pressure-reducing valve should be at least one diameter smaller than the upstream pipeline. Other pipeline accessories such as steam-water separators, filters, and shut-off valves should have the same diameter as the pipeline. If necessary, a bypass valve can be installed on the pressure-reducing valve for emergency use. The bypass valve should be installed above the pressure-reducing valve and have the same diameter as the pressure-reducing valve.

Advantages of parallel piping:

● Wide flow control range, easily adaptable to flow changes based on season or equipment operation volume.

● Even if a pressure reducing valve malfunctions, at least one pressure reducing valve can still continuously supply steam, mitigating the risk to steam-using equipment.

● When steam consumption increases due to the addition of equipment, pipeline construction is easier.

Methods for setting pressure:

The two pressure reducing valves need to have a certain pressure difference. The appropriate value for this pressure difference is the rated pressure drop or 0.03-0.05 MPa. (If the set pressure is the same, the two pressure reducing valves will show the same operating state, and the overlapping vibration cycles will cause resonance, which can easily cause pipeline vibration and other phenomena.) Under normal circumstances, one valve is used for small flow rates, and two valves work simultaneously for large flow rates.

Two-stage pressure reduction is achieved through series connection:

The maximum pressure reduction ratio of the 25P steam pressure reducing valve is 10:1. If the pressure reduction ratio exceeds 10:1, two pressure reducing valves should be used in series to obtain accurate pressure control.
